Why did so many New Testament writers speak of the eminent return of our Lord Jesus, yet two thousand years later we still wait? Could it be we, the church, are missing something? Could it be that Jesus sits ready, yet waits for His bride to align herself with divine expectation and in so doing, make herself ready?
History reveals the Church focusing on what Jesus must do before His second coming while the Word of God puts the doing in the lap of the Church. The just and righteous demands of God were satisfied in Christ’s first coming. The victory of the cross was so complete, the triumph of the resurrection so final, that Jesus Himself pronounced, “It is finished.”
With His work complete, He waits for His bride to become all He has expected. Central to this becoming is the fulfilling of Jesus’ prayer in John 17 for the Church to be unified. In the face of hostility and division, the Holy Spirit is calling forth a company who will begin to walk in unity for the sake of Christ's return.
